Steve Pajak of the Sacramento Bee visited Lincoln Hills Golf Club to see for himself what riding the GolfBoard was all about. As someone who has never surfed or skateboarded, Steve found himself experiencing golf in a way he never has before. "I smiled incessantly," he wrote, "I couldn't help it. I can't wait to do it again."

Pajak met up with Terry Fitzwater - a golfer who normally plays a couple other regional courses. Fitzwater was back to Lincoln Hills for his second turn on a GolfBoard. A 66-year-old veteran golfer, he said, "If I had the choice, the GolfBoard or a cart, I'd take the GolfBoard every time."

The Week In Review

Everywhere you look golfers are finding out how easy and fun it is to go GolfBoarding! As more club Owners and Managers make the wise decision to include GolfBoards at their facilities, golfers are coming from miles away for their own GolfBoarding experience. And it doesn't stop there. News media outlets are flocking to golf courses to report on all the excitement GolfBoards are generating. Consider these facts coming from courses with GolfBoards:

  • At Trysting Tree, of the first 1,000 riders of their new GolfBoard fleet, 76% were first-time visitors to the club.
  • At Tetherow Resort, GolfBoard rentals are now exceeding golf cart rentals.
  • A private club in Oregon shared the story of a long-standing member who had ultimately quit playing, saying basically that the 'thrill is gone...' Now, with the introduction of a GolfBoard fleet, he has found renewed joy in playing golf every day.

Over the last several years, golf as an industry has been on a downward trend as far as rounds, revenue, and participation are concerned. Golf needs an injection of new players and renewed interest to help it sustain. Could GolfBoard be the catalyst that turns these trends around? Clubs are beginning to report that GolfBoards are bringing in new players, more rounds, and increased ancillary revenue beyond just the rental of the GolfBoards. Television cameras and news crews are scrambling to the first club in the area who offers GolfBoarding to their golfers - will that be YOUR club? Contact Us TODAY for your GolfBoard demo.

GolfBoarding Comes to Northern Nevada

Sierra Sage Golf Course becomes the first northern Nevada club to make the wise decision to offer GolfBoarding. Paul Nelson of KTVN Channel 2 in Reno filed this report about the excitement GolfBoards are generating in the area:

Sierra Sage Golf Course is the first northern Nevada golf course to offer GolfBoards. The machines are an alternative to golf carts, designed to get younger people on the courses and speed up the pace of play.

"It's similar to skateboarding or snowboarding, only easier," Mike Mazzaferri, President of Cal Mazz Management said.

GolfBoards have two motors, powered by lithium-ion batteries. The all-wheel drive vehicles can go up to 10 miles per hour. Professional surfer, Laird Hamilton, helped design the machine, which has been on the market for two years. They have a handle in the front, which is also where the golf bag goes.  You steer it by shifting your weight, like you would on a skateboard.

"People who have never been on any sort of board before are intrigued by it and they're already into golf and they're already athletic," Dave Norehad, GolfBoard Sales Representative said. "So, they're finding a very easy transition."

"The traditional golfers aren't so sure about it but everybody that's ridden one, to a person, has come back and said they'll do it again and they had a great time," Mazzaferri said.

Mazzaferri says he wants to get more millennials into golf. He says adding this type of transportation between shots adds an extra element of excitement.

"Golf is a very traditional sport and we need to get out of that, a little bit, and try some new things," Mazzaferri said. "This is something that's peaking a lot of people's interest."

You might expect that only younger people would use these, but almost anyone can ride them. Judy Dragoo is a 71-year-old avid golfer from Reno.  Despite having two knee replacements, she took a spin on the GolfBoard.

"After I made one lap around, it was easy," Dragoo said. "I liked it, really. It goes fairly fast, I thought."

Dragoo says she would even consider taking it for a round of golf, especially since her clubs are in a convenient location.

"I have to see what my foursome wants, but yeah, I could do that," Dragoo said. "I like it. You're clubs are right there."

Norehad says the $6,500 vehicles speed up the pace of play because they are built for one person. That means fewer stops, along the course. They can also go places golf carts can't. GolfBoard.com says the average length for a round of golf is 2 hours and 37 minutes.

"You're going right to your ball," Steven Brandon, Sierra Sage Assistant Golf Pro said. "You're not worrying about what's going on with the other players. You don't have to wait for the guy, in your cart, to hit before you go over to your ball and hit your ball. If you've got a group going out on these, it's a lot quicker."

Brandon says it can also take your mind off of golf, as you ride. Rather than focusing on your next shot or dwelling on your last one, it shifts your focus.

"When you're on the board, your just thinking about riding on the course and having fun and enjoy that," Brandon said. "When you get to your shot, you step off and then you step into the focus bump."

GolfBoards are not intended to replace golf carts, but they give golfers options. Sierra Sage is leasing four GolfBoards, which many say increases physical activity because the rider has to use specific muscle groups to steer. Besides the health benefits, Norehad says surfing the earth is a fun alternative.

"Even if you're having a good day golfing, you're having a great day on the GolfBoard. That's for sure," Norehad said.

Helmets are not required but they are available, along with kneepads.  Before anyone can use a GolfBoard for a round of golf, they have to register at sierrasagegolf.org by watching a safety video and signing a release form.

Find Golf Boring? Try GolfBoarding!

By Stephen Mayer, KATU News

NORTHWEST PORTLAND, Ore. – Move aside golf cart and say hello to the Golf Board!

You might think of it as a skateboard on steroids. A professional surfer teamed up with a Bend-based company to help add a little more excitement to your next round of golf.

They’ve been around for a few years, but this is the first time you can take them for a spin on a Portland golf course.

That’s what a few friends did on a recent day at Glendoveer Golf Course.

“It reminds you of when you’re a kid – you jump on your skateboard or scooter,” said Travis Trulson, a first-time rider.

With the help of big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton, a team of developers based in Bend first came up with the idea a few years ago. Their inspiration?

“These guys were pretty bored by golf so they created something a little more fun that gave them the same sensation they get out on their boards,” said sales representative Jordan Greenbaum.

Now the boards can be found at nearly 150 courses across the world, including several in Oregon and Washington.

Sales representative Jordan Greenbaum said these things are constantly turning heads on the course.

He demonstrated the golf board around the course and stopped to let one woman, Mari Boarder, give it a try. With hardly any instruction, she was off. Now she wouldn’t just use it on the course, she’d take it all over town.

“I want one at home, go to the store, walk the dogs – whatever – they’re great!” she said.

The Golf Boards will cost you $10 more than a golf cart for 18 holes. Glendoveer has eight of them, but you may want to call ahead. They were all taken the day KATU visited.

GolfBoard- Not Your Father's Golf Cart

Writing for the San Jose Mercury News, Chris Santella set out to discover what this great new innovation for golf is going to do for the sagging golf industry. Clubs everywhere that have adopted GolfBoards as a new alternative offering are reporting increased rounds and revenue, and golfers are finding out what an exciting experience it is to go GolfBoarding.

Louis Bennett, Head Golf Professional at Tetherow Resort in Bend, Oregon, reports a 400% increase in local play over last year. "I almost forgot I was playing golf, it was that much fun," is a familiar response from golfers coming in off the 18th.

Our Friends in the UK Put GolfBoards to the Time Test . . .

. . . And We Like the Results. You Will Too!

The proof is now officially in the pudding. Rob McGarr and his team at Today's Golfer decided to put GolfBoards to the time test. Take four golfers of varying skill levels, play 9 holes 3 times: once walking, once in a buggy (that's a golf cart over here you guys!), and once on a GolfBoard. As much as we already know how much GolfBoarding will help eliminate the 5-hour rounds that have become the bane of golf's existence, we appreciate the real-world results.

Tokatee - Must See/Must Play/Must Ride a GolfBoard

Historic Tokatee Golf Club in Oregon adds to its mystique with the introduction of GolfBoards

Tokatee is a Chinook Indian word meaning "a place of restful beauty". Once you go there, you'll understand why.

Among all of the spectacular golf courses in the Pacific NW, few have attained the must-see/must-play status of Tokatee. Nestled into the beautiful McKenzie River Valley just East of Eugene, Oregon, the Ted Robinson-designed 18-hole layout evokes a special emotional connection with players who treasure the opportunity to enjoy Tokatee's beautiful natural aesthetics and its purposely laid-back, rustic ambiance. Tokatee is consistently ranked among the "Best Courses in Oregon" by Golf Digest. Management's mission to deliver "Golf at its finest" to their guests has now taken on an entirely new and memorable dimension by offering players the opportunity to experience Tokatee on a GolfBoard.

For more information about Tokatee and to rent a GolfBoard for your next round, go to www.tokatee.com or contact the Pro Shop at 800-452-6376.
